The Town of Petawawa is moving ahead with a trailhead pilot project. At the county council meeting last week, Petawawa Mayor and Chair of the Development and Property Committee, Bob Sweet, provided an update on several trail related projects. He says staff are working on developing a container shopping plaza, tourism kiosks, public washrooms, a gazebo, trailhead and other infrastructure.
Part of the two-year trailhead pilot project, which starts this spring, includes creating an access point to the Algonquin Trail for motorized vehicles. Currently vehicles have to access the trail from neighbouring municipalities, but an access point has been proposed using property next to Kiddyland Park off of Norman Street. County of Renfrew staff have been directed to provide an access agreement for the Town of Petawawa.
The town plans to work with local businesses, snowmobile and ATV clubs to grow tourism in the community. Petawawa is looking to become more ATV friendly.
