Pembroke’s hope of scoring provincial and federal government funding to build a new community pool has taken a major hit. Mayor Mike Lemay tells myFM news that the city has been told they were not successful in their bid for funding under the Canada Infrastructure Program, Community, Culture, and Recreation Stream. Lemay says he’s disappointed by the decision.
Pembroke received support from neighboring municipalities in their application, which included a six-lane pool, a large therapeutic pool, a small gymnasium, walking track, multi-purpose rooms, children and youth areas, food lounge and bowling lanes just to name a few. After speaking with the YMCA, the cost of such a facility would be in the order of $25.2 million. If successful, the federal government share would be about $10 million, the province would kick in $8.4 million and Pembroke would be on the hook for about $6.7 million. Pembroke’s Mayor says council will regroup and look at other options going forward.
