The City of Pembroke has budgeted $1.9-million for Phase 1 of the Nelson Street reconstruction project. The first phase is a 350-meter stretch from Maple Street to Cecelia Street. During a virtual public meeting last night (February 18th, 2021), JP2G design engineers outlined the scope of the work that will be completed. The project will include five phases and stretch roughly 1.65 km from Mackay Street to Howard Street/Pembroke Street East.
As part of Phase 1, sidewalks would be added to the south side of Nelson Street and connect to the existing side streets. A new water main is needed, and a new sanitary sewer system will be added next to the existing one to provide additional capacity to the system. New curbs and gutters will also be installed to bring storm water to a new sewer system, eliminating the need for open ditches. The job is expected to go out to tender in March with the contract awarded in April and construction starting late in the spring. The section of Nelson Street will need to be closed while crews are working on the underground infrastructure. The contractor will be responsible for a traffic management plan while the road is closed with accommodations made for local traffic.
