
In a vote of five to one, Pembroke city council became the first municipality in Renfrew County to declare a climate emergency. On Tuesday, Councillor Ed Jacyno, who put forward the motion, mentioning that climate change is resulting in more frequent instances of severe and damaging weather. Jacyno says that he believes by joining the other over 475 Canadian municipalities that have made such a declaration, the City of Pembroke can make an impact. Pembroke Mayor Michael LeMay thanked the city’s Climate Action Committee for its hard work over the last year working on the climate emergency declaration resolution document. Councillor Andrew Plummer was the one member of council who did not vote in favour of the resolution.
