A Snapchat from one of the passengers in the vehicle that was demolished in a 2017 crash along Calabogie Road could have been the last thing seen by the driver Brandon Hanniman.
This afternoon (April 30th, 2021), new evidence was introduced shedding light on events leading up to the collision in October of 2017 that killed two and seriously injured two other 18-year-old hockey players from Renfrew.
Ann Senack, the former bartender at Shooters Bar and Grill, who allegedly served the underage teenagers their last shot about 20-minutes before they were involved in the crash, has been charged with criminal negligence causing death and bodily harm.
None of the charges have been proven in court.
Brandon Hanniman and Alex Paquette died from injuries sustained in the collision in the early morning hours of October 27th, 2017.
Jacob McGrimmon was able to pull himself from the wreckage and suffered what’s commonly known as a seatbelt fracture.
The other survivor, Ben Schueneman, was ejected from the vehicle and told the court he broke his pelvis, collarbone, ruptured his spleen and suffered brain bleeding in multiple places.
All four of the young men were 18-years-old at the time and had been served alcohol, despite the legal drinking age in Ontario being 19.
The court has heard that Schueneman and Paquette provided fake ID to the bartender and were using the driver’s license of their older brothers.
The other two were not asked for identification despite being under age.
A fifth friend who was not in the vehicle when it crashed, but was at Shooters Bar and Grill the night in question, was 19 and not asked for ID.
The crown is arguing in 2-hours the young men were at the bar, the bartender served them 51 drinks, including beer, shooters, shots and mixed drinks.
The defense argues the 51 drinks only works out to about 25 standard drinks (5 drinks per person over 2-hours), due to the percentage of alcohol and the size of the shot glasses used.
The defense attorneys showed the court evidence today that suggests moments before the collision, the driver of the vehicle was sent a Snapchat by one of the passengers in the car who survived.
Earlier this week, the court heard how seconds before losing control of the vehicle, the driver showed the person in the passenger seat something on their phone.
McGrimmon told the court he remembers looking at the cell phone of the driver Brandon Hanniman moments before they caught the shoulder of the road, overcorrected and swerved into the ditch with the drivers side smashing into a rock face.
A collision report showed the vehicle hitting the gravel shoulder of the road at 127 kilometers an hour.
When the car started rolling drivers side over passenger it was travelling between 63 and 77 kilometers an hour.
Both teenagers that were killed were sitting on the drivers side of the vehicle.
The crown asked for an early end to the court proceedings to determine the next steps.
The trial will resume on May 10th, 2021 when the defense continues to cross-examination Schueneman.
