A group of Indigenous residents are walking along Highway 17 on their way to Parliament Hill.
Chipewyan Prairie First Nation Councillor Stacey Boucher tells myFM they want the government to make changes to the Indian Act for the right reasons.
Boucher says they are walking in memory of the young kids who never made it home from residential schools and taking their pain every step of the way.
The Chipewyan Prairie First Nation Councillor says local residents can walk along or honk when driving by to show support.
Boucher adds the support has been amazing with some people stopping to greet and thank them for what they are doing.
The group named, Blinding Light Walk – Tiger Lily, is walking 20-kilometers a day.
They started their walk in Sudbury on July 18th and tonight (August 11th) are stopped just east of Renfrew.
Boucher says they are supporting each other along the way and keeping hydrated.
Environment Canada has issued a heat warning across the Ottawa Valley and Renfrew County with temperatures hovering around 40 degrees celcius with the humidex.
The group will likely pass through Arnprior on Thursday (August, 12th) with another 20-kilometer day planned.
More information about the walk can be found online by following the Blinding Light Walk – Tiger Lily Facebook page.
