The Pembroke Fire Department responded to reports of a barge on fire on the Ottawa River last night.
At around 9 pm, the Fire Department arrived at the barge, the launch site of a fireworks display organized by Algonquin College.
The Fire Department says the professional company overseeing the display followed all safety protocols during the set-up and firing of fireworks.
When the crew identified the fire, they notified the Fire Department.
Fire Department personnel extinguished the fire, which was contained to the barge- safely offshore.
While the fire was safely extinguished by the Fire Department, the heavily damaged barge will have to be removed from the river today.
The Fire Department is taking the opportunity to remind people about the danger and unpredictability of fireworks.
