Petawawa council has received updated plans for the roundabout proposed at Petawawa Boulevard (County Road 51), Mohns Avenue, Hilda Street and Doran Road (County Road 26).
Representatives from the County of Renfrew and AECOM presented to council last night (October 18th, 2021).
Town councillors were showed options between a 4-leg and 5-leg roundabout.
With a 4-leg roundabout, a cul-de-sac would be required at the end of Hilda Street.
Councillors voiced support for the 5-leg roundabout option noting the potential impact to businesses on Hilda Street.
Mayor Bob Sweet says it was nice to see the representatives from the County of Renfrew and AECOM listen to concerns raised about the roundabouts.
The Petawawa Mayor says he still plans to push for the 4-laning of County Road 51 with the addition of a second bridge.
He adds vehicles waiting up to 45 minutes in traffic for such a short drive is unacceptable.
The Petawawa Mayor says it was nice to see the previous concerns that council raised have been addressed.
Pedestrians, snowmobilers and ATV riders looking to get across the busy roundabout in Petawawa will be able to press a button to activate flashing lights to help safely cross.
The new roundabouts would also be built with the potential to 4-lane the roadway if funding becomes available.
As part of the council meeting Monday night, the Town of Petawawa passed a resolution supporting the plans for the 5-leg roundabout at Petawawa Boulevard, Mohns Avenue, Hilda Street and Doran Road.
To help with the flow of traffic coming off the base, a second roundabout would also be built at the entrance to Garrison Petawawa.
