Petawawa Mayor Bob Sweet says the town has lost an icon with the passing of Fred Molson.
The mayor extended his condolences to the family as part of the virtual council meeting Monday night (January 10th, 2021).
According to the obituary from the Neville Funeral Home, Frederick Walter Raymond “Fred” Molson passed away very peacefully at home with his wife, children and grandchildren at his side, while watching the hockey game on Saturday, January 8th, 2022 at the age of 87 years.
Fred “The King of the Hill“ Molson of Petawawa was the beloved husband of Edna for 56 years.
Fred was born, raised and lived his entire life in Petawawa.
He was proud to play as goalie for the Pembroke Little Lumberkings growing up.
Fred worked at AECL for 42 years, during this time he introduced thousands of children and adults to alpine skiing in Deep River and Petawawa.
He was the General Manager at Mount Martin Ski Club for 27 years and he was the founder of the Petawawa Ski Club in 1961, which ran for 59 years.
It was Fred’s dream decades ago to open an ice cream shop at the hill, which was finally realized this past summer with the opening of the Mount Molson Dairy Bar.
In his own words, Fred spent his lifetime “making a mountain out of a molehill”.
In 2018, he was inducted into the Petawawa Sports & Entertainment Hall of Fame.
Respecting Fred’s wishes, cremation has taken place.
